WIW: Vest With Sleeveless Outfits

When Angie blogged about what is a summer hot weather uniform for me when I make peace with aging arms and elbows, I wanted to post some of my outfits. Some you have seen before and I don't think that all of these work.
1-5: First up, my black sleeveless jacket. This one is a favorite with it's structured drape.
6-7: White denim vest from ON.
8-9: faded denim Hinge vest
I will try to add other photos that I can't locate now on the thumbnails of my camera roll.
I appreciate all comments and suggestions for improvement. Should I look for other vests? If so, what kind?

Ooh, I think the vest in 1-5 looks really sharp on you, I like it both ways you've styled it, with a bit of contrast to make it pop against the jeans; it also looks very polished with the dress.
I like the white one as well, perhaps best in #7, but I'm no expert!

Wow. You nailed it all, you gorgeous creature. Wave to Tanya - your Sleeveless Squared Style Twin.

Joy, I particularly love #1, 3, 4 and 7. Killer x4. The pointy toe flats with the midi in #7 are SO trendy. xo

I really like that black vest - a lot - so 1-4 are my favorites. I think I'd look for more in that general style and I'd like to find one in that style myself. I have a utility style vest (or maybe it's more "safari") but I'd prefer a simpler more modern one like your black one here.

I love the outfits with the first two vests, to my eye they work really well as far as proportions and color. The light denim vest is not striking me as really well matched as the others, but the vest itself fit you nicely.

I really like the lines in the first sleeveless topper.  The points on the ends of the sweater seem to add length but only in points so it doesn't overwhelm your small frame.  I really like #4.  I would also like to see this one with a bit more contrast to the under layer.  Not that I don't like the ones you posted since I do but I am curious to see if it is as fab with contrast.

And who doesn't need a denim vest in the closet?

You look great in sleeveless outfits!
I like the black drapey best. I think you look fine in the denim vests with pockets, but of those,  I agree that the proportions of #7 are the best--wearing the almost cropped style over a long column, and juxtaposing the structure of the cotton, pockets and so forth with the unstructured dress.

What a great set of outfits Joy! It is great fun to see more sleeveless vest outfits.

I absolutely adore the first vest, the lines are very architectural .  All the outfits with it are superb, and #1 is out fo this world.
The denim vests are fun too, and I really like #7, the proportions are perfect.

Love all the looks - a great set of outfits. My favorite is the vest in 1, 2 and 3 because of all the great lines.

  • pil replied 9 years ago

So nice, Joy! Like the others I'm really drawn to the black vest, I think it echoes your delicate ankles fabulously in 1/2. The white is so crisp and fresh and the denim more casual and relaxed.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Thank you to all who commented. I learn so much when finding out your preferences. The black vest in the first group definitely is the favorite. I'd love to find a denim one that shape. The white denim has had more wear than the faded blue one this summer. The shrunken look of the blue may now be out of style. I like it best with a black sleeveless dress, but not the one pictured. I have one that is more fitted and shorter and the proportions look better to my eye. I should also say that some of these like #6 don't have the best styling and footwear because they were worn to work out at the gym or walk the dog.
Angie, a Killer X4 really made my day!
Dianthus, I would love to find more vests the style of the black one. Your point that it doesn't overpower me is exactly why some white/cream versions that were posted this spring didn't work out for me. I will try to use the black one with something of greater contrast.
Unfrumped, your observations are very helpful. Maybe the vest gives some structure to the loose dress.
Tanya, I so admire your looks and am inspired by them.

I really love the black vest...super fab. Very modern and elegant. I'm not as excited about the others, but I don't know why. Maybe I feel like the cut is too informal for you on the others? Or maybe I feel like the denim style doesn't go with the other outfit elements? I'm really not sure.

  • Shirley replied 9 years ago

Numbers 1, 2 and 3 are my favorites.

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Joy these are really terrific. #1 and #7 are my favorites but I like them all. And you have great looking arms, something I have noticed many times.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Gigi, I appreciate your comment about the denim vests. I tend to use the blue one especially to try to make a dress outfit more casual looking, a summer version of the denim jacket. But it may not be working very well. I know it doesn't feel right with many of my dresses. Food for thought and experimenting, something I enjoy. Thank you.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Shevia, bless you for your kind comment about my arms. I'm a bit sensitive about how they show age but YLF and Angie have given me the confidence to go sleeveless anyway. A relief in our hot summers.

  • Neel replied 9 years ago

Awww Joy .... Your arms are fantastic. I agree with shevia wholeheartedly. And I am in love with the black vest. It's gorgeous on you. You wear vests beautifully!

  • Lyn D. replied 9 years ago

I am now seeing the value of a well-cut vest as the third piece Joy!
Loving the structured vest- the pointy hem is a great touch- bringing the eye the full length of your outfits.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

oh my goodness, you do wear the sleeveless look well, Joy! No worries about arms, ok? Look at yourself in photo 2 whenever you doubt it. I love that outfit on you--so cool and chic. All of these are great, and I'd look for another flowy vest, since you kind of have the denim field covered. Maybe something in a light color--cream or taupe, or metallic? Something a little lacy or open-weave?

eta: the Eileen Fisher one below is gorgeous--a friend of mine has it--and I can envision it on you.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Neel, thank you for your kind words.
Lyn, the vest is a great way to add a third piece.
Firecracker, thank you for your arm comments. I have been stalking the EF vest and maybe it is time to try it. I need to check the measurements because it looks like even the petite could be too long. Do you know if your friend bought her usual size? Some of the reviews say it runs small and to size up, but I suspect those women had breasts.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

My friend wears petite sizes on top, and that's what she bought. She got the small, and I think that's pretty much her usual size, although she may sometimes wear a medium. She's a bit busty, pretty much an apple or rectangle with slender arms and legs. She's probably about 5' 5" and short-waisted, and it was a flattering length on her.

  • fathenry replied 9 years ago

    Wow! Love outfits 1,2,3!

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Firecracker, you have convinced me to place an order. Thank you for coming back to answer my question.

  • Mary Beth (formerly LBD) replied 9 years ago

You really hit this one out of the park!   I have no other feedback, other than to say these outfits really work!   I have a similar vest to your black one (it may even be the same vest, upon closer inspection!), so I am bookmarking this, to eventually give #4 a copycat try   :D

  • citygirldc replied 9 years ago

I love your style and the sleeveless jacket was made for you. I love 5, 7, 8 and 9. Hmmm, must borrow the denim look for my upcoming trip.

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

Wow, Joy, you are rocking the vest look!!! I love them all, but especially love the crisp white ON vest! Well done! You look cool and put together. Very inspiring :)

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

Beautifully done, Joy!  I love this kind of layering.  I think a more architectural, modern minimalist vest (like the EF one) would make a nice addition -- perhaps both in black and a lighter tone.
