August Challenge 4: make some hot fall capsules

This last week of August I find that I desperately need to build some capsules for the hot Autumn days of September and even October. Yesterday I carved out an olive and orange capsule to which I can add white or other neutrals. There are other pieces I can add, such as my orange blazer and white denim jacket and white and olive jeans, when it gets cooler.
These combinations seem to work in my head but may not hold up when actually worn.
Comments and suggestions are welcomed. What else do I need to add? What doesn't belong?

I'm not good at capsules, but I've felt the need for hot-weather-clothes-that-still-read-as-fallish or the like, as well. For you, that looks like it's pretty easy to pull off by wearing fall colors.

What fun, autumn colors! I can't wait to see these in action, Joy.

What a smart idea, Joy! Way to go!!

Our "warm" autumn rarely lasts as long and I typically continue to wear my summer things (since our summer is so short) but at the same time I do reach for more autumn tones if I can. What a great reminder to pull something like this together.  :)

This capsule is so beautiful, I love the colors and shapes. I think everything goes together and you have here items that will serve you in the temperature ups and downs of early Fall.

Nice capsule!  I like your idea of using autumn colors in summery shapes and styles to get the feeling of fall when the temps are still warm.

Looks good laid out like this, Joy. Nice transition into hot Autumn weather. The proof is in the wearing. Lets see some outfits.

Btw, GREAT way to create a capsule. Finds is excellent for that, and my toes are tickled.

Very nice capsule, Joy. This year I remembered the forum advice from last year to create a fall-in-summer capsule. Definitely needed when fall starts mid-October!

I love trying to start adding more fall colors even if the temps are still warm. You have some great options there and should be fun for outfit creation.
Also related: have at hand "warmer" items (long-sleeved tops in silk, cotton or poly) that seemed too hot for July but work for me in A/C as soon as temps start to moderate even a bit. Sometimes I let this season get ahead of me and then I'm on to warm sweaters.

A great idea and you seem to have a varied selection to make this workable. Now to see it in action...

I'm having computer troubles today, so am doing a general reply to avoid having to redo it, I hope.
This is the first time I've addressed the hot autumn days. We will see if this works. I have purposely held back some fall-colored linen to have something different to wear when sick of most of my summer things. We will see how it works out. I am also working on a red and brown capsule and blue and brown.
I'll start pulling from these capsules plus neutrals starting next week and post the outfits. I hope to extend each capsule for cooler weather.
Angie, using the finds and creating finds is a great way to show a capsule and helpful to me to be able to add details in Notes and photos of the pieces in outfits. Thank you so much to you and Greg for creating this feature.

now here is outfit inspiration--if it cools off a bit I will post a couple of my ideas.  I am putting together a small 4 day travel capsule for a september trip.

    *happy sigh*

Always trying, I'm looking forward to seeing your travel capsule. I also need to put together a travel capsule for 5-6 days in September. I'm waiting to see what the weather will be like but need to consider my options.

Oh wow, Joy! I think these pieces are going to look great and can't wait to see them in action. You have totally inspired me, I've been pondering what to place in a 'hot autumn' capsule since you mentioned the 5-6 season wardrobe concept last week.

How many items total do you think will be in your hot autumn capsule to see you through the end of October?

  • CocoLion replied 8 years ago

Great idea, I share your hot autumn September and October.  I especially like your printed tops, which surprises me as I've had a fear of printed tops for a while now.  Finally coming out of it with all of my plaid tops I guess.

    Seems very thorough and complete!

I would like to see a cross body bag - unless you don't like them! To me these beautiful casual combos scream cross body or satchel.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Aloina, I'm not sure how many pieces I will want.  in a capsule I aim for about 6 tops, 2-3 toppers, 4 bottoms plus a skirt, a dress or a second skirt, three pair of shoes, one clutch, one large bag, and a few accessories.  I want to concentrate on deeper colors in pieces that are summer weight.

CocoLion, When I made a capsule for the first time I realized that I needed more pattern. All my plaid pieces so far have sleeves.  Summer weight plaid is a wardrobe hole.  I like your plaid tops.

Rachylou, time and forming outfits will tell if it is complete.

Brooklyn, I just saw your post.  The two clutches can also be worn as shoulder bags with removable straps.  I'm not sure that the straps are long enough to be crossbody. I do have a pewter satchel that would work.

in the Finds below, the mustard bag is a crossbody.  The pewter is a satchel and my favorite bag ever.

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

Great. The mustard one is exactly the sort of thing I had in mind. The pewter one will work well wth some of your shoes.

It makes sense and  looks great to me, can't wait to see the actual outfits!

This looks very promising, Joy.  It's nice to have some options to transition from summer to autumn.  Looking forward to seeing some of the outfits in action over the coming weeks.
