WIW: Holiday looks and playing with thrift store finds

1. This is what I wore to Mass and to the Symphony today plus the skirt is thrifted. This shows simpler version of the outfit w/o scarf.
2. Same with leopard print scarf added for warmth. Which version do you like best? I suspect this skirt could be shorter. Your suggestions on anything about this outfit are welcomed. I wish I had better booties.
3. Another holiday outfit worn to A Christmas Carol. This is made up of old favorites and the boots desperately need replacing. Is the scarf too much?
4/5. Wide thrifted wool trousers tried after Angie's post Suggestions?
6. Avert your eyes if you don't want to see an old lady in a pink hoodie! After Angie's post on hoodies with jackets I found that I had this AT cashmere hoodie from the thrift store that was in a box to send to an aunt to deconstruct. Too youthful?
7. Same with a wool navy blazer (also thrifted years ago)...not the most modern style, but what do you think in general? Pants are trouser jeans.
I welcome your thoughts on what you think works and what does not and ideas for styling and improvement.
ETA: 8. What I wore for Thanksgiving...a repeat of a recent outfit with brown sequined cardi and sparkly brown shell. The sparkle doesn't show up in the photos. This was comfortable for cooking with a bib apron on top.

Great outfits! #3 is stunning, and no, I don't think the scarf is too much. I think it makes the outfit!

I don't really see a big difference between #1 and #2, with scarf or without. I was actually wondering if there was a way to lighten up the outfit, since you are a light-haired person. It seems like the outfit is a little dark for you color-wise. Would you want to try nude hose and a lighter-colored layering top to see what that does?

I don't think the hoodie/blazer combo is too youthful at all.

As for the bootcuts, I am ignorant about them. I am just getting into that area myself--I have a couple of pairs of jeans to try on these week with the bootcut legs. So hopefully someone else will chime in on styling suggestions!

You are one stylish lady!! Love the skirt in pic 1 although I might prefer it a tad shorter. I think the scarf is a great pattern mixing piece in pic 2, makes the outfit trendy.

The skirt in pic 3 is gorgeous! And the hoodie look is fresh and not tweeny IMO! The polka dot scarf is great but I think I like the outfit more without the scarf! Love the roll of the jeans in last pic! Fabness overall!

Well, a hot pink hoodie might have been too much, but yours is lovely!
I think I agree with you on the length of your pic1 skirt though.
Really like the skirt in #3, and the scarf picks-up similar colours in it so I say not too much at all.

You are a real beauty Joy-  #3 is my personal favorite, I love the classic, clean lines on you.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous! I think the pink hoodie is my favorite!

  • Catnip replied 10 years ago

I love your outfits!  The two with the pink hoodie are my favorites because you look gorgeous in pink.  Also, they look youthful (but not too youthful) and stylish.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Thank you for your comments. They are so helpful!
Gigi and Neel, I'm glad the scarf in #2 is working. I need to have the waist taken in on the skirt so that it sets higher at the waist.
Gigi, I want to try your lightening up ideas.
Lyn and Missey, I love that skirt and hoped the scarf would work to relieve the black but still let the skirt be the star.
Shevia and Catnip, I'm happy that you like the hoodie. I found it so comfortable as a layer on a cold day, the soft hood almost like a scarf.

What a pretty holiday skirt! I'm not sure it needs to be shorter -- probably doing the taking in at the waist will give it what you want there. I prefer the version of this without the scarf and I would like to see you try Gigi's suggestions for lightening up the outfit. Then again, that might make it feel quite "springlike" and here you get to wear it during the winter.

Love #2. So festive and pretty!

I also love the wide trousers outfit and am envious of your bag there.

The hoodie looks spectacular on you! Keep and enjoy for this season, please!

Your outfits are always such a treat! I'm especially enamored with 2 and 6. I adore that hoodie on you. I like the idea of 7 - I think I might prefer it with either a more modern blazer or more modern bottoms - maybe try white or BF jeans?

  • Liz A. replied 10 years ago

#6 is TDF!  You need to keep and rock that hoody.  Not loving the blazer in 7, but it would work with another blazer.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Suz, thank you for your valued comments.  The skirt is rayon and can probably be worn year round...a rarity.
The bag with the trousers is one that MaryK has too, although maybe a different shade.  It is from Target!
Your hoodie outfit gave me the inspiration for this one.
Carambola and Liz, I really need to update blazers.  This navy one is from a thrift store a few years ago.  I love the idea of updating the pants!

  • replied 10 years ago

#1/2 The skirt looks fab as is I wouldn't shorten it. Some cute booties is a great idea.
What a fun skirt in #3.  Those trousers look great on you and I love the pink hoodie with and without the blazer.
    Fun Thanksgiving outfit too.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

Love that pink hoodie on you!

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Tracina and Lisa, thank you for commenting. You are like a perfect mirror letting me see my outfits the way stylish women do.

  • Day Vies replied 10 years ago

#3 is my favorite. I like the whimsy print on the skirt and fact the scarf picks up the skirt's colors. I love that red jacket especially with the belt and scarf. The skirt is lovely too I just think the jacket and accessories suggest a very strict perspective, and the cut and print of the skirt is more playful. The hoodie/ blazer combo works very well a wonderful balance of playful and polished. I love the cuffs on the jeans in #8.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Day, thank you for your astute comments and help. The red jacket is actually part of a pencil skirt suit which is standing in until I find a PPP red suit. As part of a suit it keeps strict integrity. The cuffs on 8 were an afterthought. I'm still trying to nail that look but they did up the happiness factor.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

You look amazing in all, Joy.  I love #3, and I think the scarf brings attention to your face.

The bootcuts are fluid fabulosity, and I the simplicity of the whole outfit is marvelous.

Your never to old for cashmere, and your take on the hoodie is quite grown up, particularly with the blazer.

The Thanksgiving outfit is perfect --- autumnal, but with a little sparkle, and a dose of practicality!

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Thank you, Beth Ann. That's a good point that the scarf in 3 brings the eye to the face.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Oh my goodness Joy - your hoodie outfit is fantastic! Pink is a beautiful color on you and the fit is perfect. You have nailed Angie's formula here. I also love the wide legged trouser outfit - gorgeous.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

How gorgeous are you in #7, Joy. So fun. You fabulous creature.

Also loving the classic and trendy combination in #8. You stylish lady. xo

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 10 years ago

Ooh, I think outfit 7 is just right! It's a pairing I would never have thought of without Angie's prompting, and you look great in it.

You are looking chic in all of these!

I like the first outfit best with the scarf; I like the addition of some sassy pattern-mixing. I think it feels more current and I like the way the scarf complements your coloring.

Love your Thanksgiving outfit! Very cool look, especially fun with the sparkle, even though it doesn't come through in the photo.

The wide leg pants are great on you. I agree with others, I might try a different jacket. I like the length of it, but I'm wondering about updating the look more with something less classic. How about a jean jacket instead of blazer? Or a bomber or moto style.

I do like the way the scarf in 3 picks up the colors in the skirt, and those boots are smashing with the outfit.

Your bags and accessories are all so well chosen in these outfits.
I forgot to mention on your Friday picture perfect challenge post--I do like that Kate Spade bag for you. I didn't find it too big--the size seemed just right, in fact--and it's a gorgeous style and color for you!

  • replied 10 years ago

The pink hoodie is perfect! In fact, lets call it blush, and then it sounds even better, lol! Why can't I find one at the thrift stores? I love it under the blazer; it would be perfect with skinny jeans and a shorter jacket, too. You're looking great Joy. Your hair is the envy of the forum! :D
