The Red Kimono: ok or too much? ETA: Long jeans & column of black

Angie's blog post reminded me of a kimono that I use as a robe. Does it work with jeans on me? I would love your thoughts.
Bonus of what I wore to meet a group of new neighbors...black and bone.

I love the second outfit, Joy!
I'm not sure about the kimono. Maybe you can open it up a bit more so it isn't overwhelming the rest of the outfit? I have a kimono that I feel like does the same thing....I will post mine later.

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

I love the kimono outfit! It is a very dramatic look -- but you wear it well. Outfit #3/#4 is stunning and sophisticated. I like the black/bone color combo.

  • replied 7 years ago

I really like the kimono.  I think the proportions are off.  The kimono is really long (which is a good thing), but the jeans are cropped.  That seems to throw everything off.

  • Cerinda replied 7 years ago

I love the kimono outfit! But then I like the trend best as  "statement" and "accessory" rather than "essential wardrobe item" (says the person who constantly wears solid neutral jackets with slightly gaudy accessories, and has also repurposed a favorite robe). Quite a change from your usual polished, subtle, and sophisticated look.  The bone and black is wonderful, and very, very you.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

    Thank you for your help.
Kris, this kimono is rather voluminous on me. It is silk lined in silk, so has movement and opens up more when walking. It also has a self belt that reigns in the volume but looks more robe-like then.
El Cee and Cerinda, the second outfit ( black and bone) feels more like me.
Sterling, I think you are on to something. I will try the kimono with full length and maybe fuller pants.
You have given me interest to keep working with the kimono to try to make acceptable outfits. I think it would fit right in in the Boulder, Colorado area as I see many unusual outfits, especially on women my age.

  • Barbara Diane replied 7 years ago

That is a fabulous kimono and deserves to be seen by more people. :)
The second is a very elegant structured outfit.
I love that you look great in both.

  • RobinF replied 7 years ago

Love the kimono but I also wonder if it might be better with different proportions. The second outfit is great! I love neutrals together but often forget to try it.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

I LOVE the kimono outfit. Simply stunning on you, Joy. The other outfit is gogeous on you too. Hope the move went well.

  • Beth Ann replied 7 years ago

Drat.  Did I miss your move?  Are you in Boulder now?  If so, they're lucky to have you!

The kimono is terrific.  I can see it best with heels, over a column of color ----- or at a showing of Madame Butterfly!

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

    Barbara Diane, thank you.
RobinF, your comment about proportions is helpful and underlines what Sterling said.
Angie, thank you. You always boost my confidence and make fashion fun. The move is in the "unpacking and where can I put this" stage. We have way too many photographs. There is only one full length mirror so I hope the photos are ok.

  • L'Abeille replied 7 years ago

If there is a self belt can you knot it in back to reign in the volume some, like we used to do with trench coats?

I can't get over how drop dead chic you look in outfit 2!

  • rachylou replied 7 years ago

The kimono is awesome...2 is a completely different kind of awesome...

  • deb replied 7 years ago

Love the kimono, yes definitely wear.

  • Kimberley replied 7 years ago

I think you wear the kimono really well. It is a really playful piece and it looks great on you!

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

I like both outfits. The kimono is beautiful and you look good in red.

  • Sal replied 7 years ago

Oh yes- I remember that stage of moving. I like both looks - but the second one is just so elegant and chic on you.

  • Cococat replied 7 years ago

The kimono look is nice and I can imagine a long narrow scarf with it too.

The second look is my favourite. It looks beautiful on you!

  • Mirjana replied 7 years ago

Kimono is beautiful on you, but bonus , I mean #3 and #4 is my favorite, so elegant .

  • Aida replied 7 years ago

Totally adore the kimono, just as you've styled it Joy. Would also be super over white skinnies+white or metallic footwear, and could also be fun paired with bermuda shorts and strappy flat sandals. Cognac leather would be especially nice with this piece too.

    Second look is super fab!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

I like the kimono outfit, and I know it looks a lot more flowy in real life, as you move. It's hard to photograph this kind of piece. I think you are right to leave off the belt. The second outfit is terrific--a classic Joy look!

  • gradfashionista replied 7 years ago

The second outfit is completely fabulous--wear it more often!

The kimono is also pretty, but the cuffs are throwing me off. Maybe something black and the same length? Or white?

  • Suz replied 7 years ago

That kimono is gorgeous. I think if you play with it you will have a winning outfit for sure.

Love the other outfit also and the photos turned out great! Congrats on your move!

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Thank you all for your thoughtful suggestions and comments. My general feeling is that the kimono works and continuing to play with outfit ideas may produce better results. I want to try your styling ideas., Aida.
It seems that the black and bone outfit is a hit. The long vest gives it some drama. I will repeat the bone and black. Most of the season I have worn this as a column of bone.

  • Jenn replied 7 years ago

Welcome to the Front Range, Joy! I like the kimono, but I'd be curious to see it with full-length jeans, since it's so long.

  • Windchime replied 7 years ago

The kimono looks amazing on you! I love the color palette and the elegance. The second outfit is also beautiful. You can successfully wear two very different outfits!

Are the pictures taken in the new bathroom? It looks beautiful; my eye went right to the brick glass--very nice!

  • Karie replied 7 years ago

I love the kimono! Perhaps wear it with either all black or all cream/white underneath. It is a gorgeous statement piece.

The second outfit is a winner too. I love black and cream/bone outfits. The bone color softens the harshness of the black.

  • Jaime replied 7 years ago

Both work beautifully to my eye.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Jenn, I think I will love living here. Thank you for the welcome.
Windchime, the pictures are taken in our new master bedroom bath. The glass brick makes a wall that curves around a walk-in shower. Our only full length mirror is on the inside of the door of the loo room, so I use it.
Karie, thank you for the ideas for styling the kimono. I can easily do all black or cream under it.
Shevia, your words mean so much coming from one whose style I really admire. Please treat us with a WIW soon.

  • Nishaa replied 7 years ago

I love it... It's a statement piece and will serve you well.

  • unfrumped replied 7 years ago

I love the kimono but not sure where I would wear it? What occasion. " Casual drama/ dramatic casual"? Dinner party with friends , or art gallery? Is it an item that is at its best when standing ( like the famous gillet)?
It also gives me an idea for loungewear though that's not what you were asking-- more along the lines of wearing more beautiful items for at- home. ( not sleepwear, but having a glass of wine and dinner with family) if I could find the right combination of form and function. It reminds me about sizing, too-- often "loungewear" items are crudely sized, so will look sloppy. Looking outside the box for regular items or unusual layering pieces could be fun.

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 7 years ago

Wow, Joy the kimono look is incredible!  And your other look is wonderful, love it!

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

Well, you must have wowed your new neighbors. The black & bone is great.

I also really like the kimono. It's bold but you pull it off well, and your styling keeps it simple enough that it works for you. Like others, I'd love to see it with longer jeans or a column of (light) color under it.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

I was wearing long jeans and black tee today so am showing you the kimono with it. I like the proportions better but what do you think?

  • replied 7 years ago

This looks so much better to my eye, Joy.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Thank you, Sterling, for pointing out the proportion problems with the cropped jeans. Maybe my short kimono jackets and Happy Coat will be better with cropped pants.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

Very elegant. And the pics work well in the new mirror, Joy.

  • Bennett replied 7 years ago

That is a beautiful kimono, does not look like a robe to me (which is my peeve about kimonos on me). You look so elegant! I must re-think my position now and find one that is this striking. Funny, you actually WERE using it as a robe!

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Angie and Bennett, you had me at "elegant", something I aspire to attain. Thank you. Angie, I'm glad the mirror is ok for photos. I am on a hunt for an oversized floor mirror for the bedroom but other things have higher priority right now.
Bennett, I guess I'll have to buy a new robe :)

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 7 years ago

Ah, very nice. I agree, it's an elegant look with the column of black. The other outfit was more cool and casual.

  • CocoLion replied 7 years ago

I like the kimono both ways, with the rolled crops and the long black jeans.  If you wore a black strappy heel it would be a going out-fit.

  • chewyspaghetti replied 7 years ago

I do like it better with the all black....I still have to post mine!

  • Susie replied 7 years ago

Beautiful outfits! You of course look elegant...I've always thought of you that way.

Your bathroom looks fantastic! Congratulations on the move; I hope you love your new home!

  • Mamavalveeta03 replied 7 years ago

Honestly, I love the red one both ways. It looks so great with your hair.

  • texstyle replied 7 years ago

I think the kimono works esp. in Boulder (love that city). The other outfit is stunning!

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Texstyle, you are right. Boulder is open to adventurous stylings. Our next door neighbors have the most beautiful kimono I've ever seen hanging on their wall! She should be wearing it.
