My Holiday Capsule

Below are the key pieces from my winter holiday capsule. I would mix these in with neutral essentials and jewelry. I forgot to include pearls...necklaces, earrings and a ring.
Do you have any suggestions? I know that I could use some sparkly booties but don't think I would get enough wear out of them. I would like to add just a few pieces of green but have not found the right ones.

Joy - do the 2 jackets go with all the bottoms? Love the earrings.

  • Gigi replied 6 years ago

Ooh, the Rachel Roy metallic skinnies are TDF!

As for suggestions, what does your handbag complement look like? If you want something sparkly but are concerned about not getting much wear out of sparkly booties, maybe a metallic or sparkly clutch would fit the bill.

I haven't seen much green around. It is past due for it to be in stores, IMO. I feel like we have been many years without green.

Wow, those are some great pieces, Joy-think you have all what you need for a glamorous & versatile holiday capsule! Think you could do even  without the metallic booties, the loafers will do the job everywhere indoors!

  • replied 6 years ago

Joy!  I was excited to see your Holiday capsule.  You do not disappoint.  It is gorgeous.

I second Lyn67's opinion.  I think you  have fabulous pieces and don't necessarily need to add to your capsule, unless you find something absolutely perfect for you.  Don't be tempted to compromise.

great pieces.  looks like a super foundation to mix in.   gives me some inspiration.   I want those metallic skinnies...

Very pretty pieces! Love the velvet jacket and shiny bottoms. I don't see any tops, wonder if you would want to add a sparkly blouse or sweater? Or I could see a velvet top with the shiny pants. I agree with the above, I haven't seen much green in stores lately.

The the texutrally rich, casual elegance of your capsule.  Metallic booties wold be a fab addition, of course, and I could see a burgundy top in silk, velvet or cahsmere.

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 6 years ago

Such rich colors and textures! <3 That skirt is amazing—like a tapestry you’d hang on the wall as art!

I recently went on a search for colored tights. Could only find green at Party City, not exactly fashion HQ.

Angie must’ve seen this post and pulled together today’s collection with fancy booties galore just for you, lol.

    NICE

You need dressier shoes, I think, Joy. Like a dressy flat.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Thank you so much! Lots of wisdom here. The whole capsule did not load. Maybe that is telling me that I have made it too large!
Anne, the two jackets do go ok with the bottoms, although I also have black silk jacket.
Gigi, for handbags, I have a gold metallic clutch, a silver hobo bag, a small black snake clutch and a bright red satchel.
Lyn, I agree that the metallic loafers are probably all I need for shoes. If it is cold and snowy, I would probably wear the beaded wool skirt, a black warm sweater and a colorful scarf with black riding boots.
Sterling, excellent advice not to add anything unless it is perfect.
Always trying, the metallic skinnies are fun but a little out of my comfort zone as they attract a lot of attention. They are a good way to look festive in a casual way in winter with a warm sweater and boots.
Robin, I have one sparkly silver pullover that did not make it with the other pieces, but it needs to be replaced. I have a black velvet shell, but black velvet is harsh on me when near the face. A scarf would help. I will play with your idea.
Beth Ann, a silk, velvet or cashmere burgundy top would be a great addition. Thank you for pointing this out. It could dress up my burgundy leather skirt.

Just scrumptious. I love your sparkly earrings. I can’t wait to see some WIWs. I want to see the tuxedo and the blue pants in action!

  • Suz replied 6 years ago

What a great capsule. I can't wait to see the outfits. Nodding with Angie -- some dressier footwear!

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Thank you, fashiontern and Angie. I do need some dressier flats. For our first holiday event last week, a neighborhood party, I ended up wearing the tuxedo pants and jacket with the red/black/white sequined top and red patent kitten heels. Those shoes would not have worked had it been icy. Below is what I wore minus the black snake clutch and black leather coat. The red shoes are just an approximation. Mine have red heels.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

I just saw your posts, Karen and Suz. Thank you! I will try to get photos. Yes, dressier footwear is a priority. I used to have plenty, but they were old and dated and did not make the cut to get moved. Time to replace.

  • JAileen replied 6 years ago

You have some pretty and versatile pieces. I especially like your tuxedo outfit.

  • Chris987 replied 6 years ago

You have such lovely pieces! Love that toffee velvet blazer and the great assortment of metallics. The snowflake jewelry is really cute. I agree with lyn67 and sterling's comments to not buy anything new unless it is really perfect. Dressier shoes would be great.

  • MsMary replied 6 years ago

Oh my gosh! Love the tuxedo and how you styled it with the red!

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Thank you , JAileen, Chris and MsMary. That tuxedo set is several years old but I am so glad to have it as well as the velvet blazer.

  • Dianna replied 6 years ago

You have a lovely collection, Joy.  I agree with Angie and Suz that adding a pair of dressier footwear would be nice.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Thank you, Dianna. Adding some dressier footwear would be a good idea. I wish I could wear heels. Wear them while you can, ladies, but be sure they are comfortable

  • Sal replied 6 years ago

    The tuxedo is just fabulous!!

What a lovely collection of holiday clothes - great detailing and textures.  I hope you have some special occasions to wear them.

  • DonnaF replied 6 years ago

As for green — Joy, have you seen Uniqlo’s Heattech green velveteen jeans? You are built close enough to my daughter that I think they would fit you. She said they are wonderfully warm.

  • Aida replied 6 years ago

That's one rockin holiday capsule. You (I?) could probably live in this mini-wardrobe for a month quite happily ^^ I was going to suggest a dark clutch and a colorful dressy shoe but it sounds like you actually have both of those covered already. I love that you can do a nice range of looks with this capsule, from light+glitzy to texturally rich+moody and everything in between.

  • replied 6 years ago

Great collection !  I'd LOVE to have a tuxedo like that ; it's my dream purchase.  You mention fearing not getting enough wear out of sparkly booties. Well, I'm here to allay your fears ;)  I wear my navy pair so often I bought a second pair in black.  I wear them in every situation you can imagine , from casual , to professional, to dressy.  I picked a metallic velvet, and they are fantastic (and they brush/wipe off, which is even better!). I bet you'd wear them a lot if you can find the right pair.

I'd also add in a dressy pearl/gold earring or cuff bracelet.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Thank you, Sal, Donna, Aida and Lisa.
Sal, I feel like this collection covers most events that may come up, including just running errands ( I don't seem to have a Find for my red Snoopy & snowman Chillin' graphic tee that works well casually peeking out from under a blazer or moto jacket).
Donna, I like the sound of those green velveteen jeans. I will take a look.
Aida, I put these items front and center in the closet to wear all month. After New Years, I will be ready for something different!
Lisa, you make a good case for sparkly booties. I do have some pearl earrings and a cuff bracelet in silver and one in gold. But they could be nicer. Good idea! I like how Brooklyn wears cuffs in pairs.

That taupe (or is it gray?) velvet jacket is divine, and your metallics are all wonderful. A very complete capsule by my standards!  About greens: I've been hankering for some deep forest green this season, too, but except for a pretty velvet smoking jacket at Banana Republic that sold out too quickly, I've seen only dull fatigue greens. Not the same wintry feeling!

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Tulle, the velvet jacket is taupe but goes well with metallics or winter white.
I hope for more greens in seasons to come, although I do best in warm shades...more forest than hunter, more peridot than emerald.

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 6 years ago

I see what you mean about no real greens. Do any of these work for you?

    (it’s like a blankie!)

(I include this because it reminds me of my chartreuse frosting, which my parents doubted, but it made fantastic trees when layered with bright green sprinkles. Maybe you have some green accessories you can “sprinkle” over the dress).

  • Angie replied 6 years ago

The tux outfit with the heels looks GREAT. We need pics of lovely you.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Sweet Angie, you sure know how to make others feel great.
Fashiontern, I am in awe of the work you must have done finding these green pieces and really appreciate the care you took to find warm greens.
I like the dress but it is too short at this stage of my life. I may try it anyway with leggings as I love sweater dresses. The next to last with the deep V neckline made me laugh. I like the last sweater best and wish it were not acrylic. Thank you. I need to take a trip to a Nordstrom and hope I can see some of these and feel the fabric.

  • Stagiaire Fash replied 6 years ago

Joy, I’m so glad you liked some of them. There were more pragmatic things I brought along to do while getting an oil change, but what fun is that? Picking out warm greens was interesting. That shade does not work for me, and I was surprised how difficult it was to look for, instead of automatically moving on past it. That drapey top, all the way to your belly button, lol!

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

No one wants to see a 71 year old belly button ( or chest!)
