More layered shirt tails (fail?)

Today I tried the longer button down shirt under a short boxy pullover. I know my eye hadn't adjusted to this look on myself, but it seems off. What is wrong?

I'm no expert really, I do rather like the effect of the scoop up of the sweater hemline and the scoop down of the shirt though and I like how the neckline shape harmonises too.

    Nothing! I love it, Joy.

I also think it looks fine! I sometimes feel like a look is off that looks perfectly alright when I'm physically uncomfortable in it.

I think you look really great, actually.  One thing I do note that may be the source of things feeling off (or not, I'm no expert)-- the width of the scoopneck means that quite a bit of the gingham check is showing up top as well as near your pants, which is changing the balance/proportions in a different way than some of the other layering cropped sweater/button down tops I've seen posted. As I said, I like your version and think you look great, but there is a slight difference to some of the other versions posted and this may be what you are seeing....

More love for this, Joy! You look amazing. The MM oxfords are perfect here too. So fun.

Fabulous. You look so good in the EF sweater. I like the way it shows off the check shirt underneath.

Sadly, I'd look so dumpy in the sweater. I always do in EF.

    Perfect from head to toe.

Are you kidding? This is brilliant!!! I love it on you. You hit it out of the ballpark.

I know the experts have already spoken, but this seems spot on!

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

I actually think this is the best sweater length and shape for this look - the curved hem keeps you from looking chopped in half!

  • Parsley replied 9 years ago

My goodness, that's no fail- it looks like a huge success to me!
    Love it!

How wonderful to come home to find so many lovely compliments.
The EF sweater was a bargain from a consignment shop whose owner decided to be a personal stylist. The last day everything was $4 and so I snapped this up. It's mostly silk with a bit of polyester. The wide neckline requires an under layer, and needs to be considered, as Kat noted. I wondered if it emphasizes my wide shoulders.
Astrid, any physical discomfort was due to really cold temperatures. I changed into warmer tops before going out.
Big thank yous to all who took time to look and comment. You have convinced me that it's ok to wear out. Angie and 12 Stylish Fabbers can't be wrong :)

Total win, not a fail at all! That makes me 13, it figures.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Thank you, Shevia. You are a lucky 13.

I really love it with the curved hem. Maybe I should try it.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Elle, I think the curved hem is important. I tried a straight hem but it really seemed off. It was also shorter though.

  • Neel replied 9 years ago

Nailed it!! Not a flop at all!! I love the layering and how the shoes match you shirt :). Fab!

  • columbine(erin) replied 9 years ago

You look fab! I like your shoes with this outfit, and the curved hems.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Without reading other comments, Joy IMHO this is how you layer a shorter sweater over a button down.  I love this.  The fluidity of the two pieces is perfect.  This is not a fail.

  • Inge replied 9 years ago

Nothing wrong at all, this is perfect, Joy. And what a fun shirt!

  • Deb replied 9 years ago

I love this play on neutrals. You look really good. It may be the longer shirt tail that is different for you. Sometimes if they are too long with a cropped jumper they can look a bit off by dividing up the body too much to my eye. Your colour choice, the gingham and length is tasteful and interesting, and works well. Repeat!!
