K/R: Olive Utility Pants and Vest

I found these Lyocell ( rayon?) pieces at Target and thought that they would work well for me during the summer, but I'm not sure. Olive is not a great color on me but not bad either and I'd be wearing a top of a different color closer to my face.
I like to wear vests as 3rd pieces in hot weather, especially with sleeveless tops. This vest could also be worn buttoned as a top.
The olive would work with many colors that I already have...navy, black, pink, coral, light blue, aqua, white, yellow, etc.
The vest and pants could each be part of other outfits. They could even possibly work for some of spring and fall.
Or, I could return them and save my money for something else. I would love your thoughts as I need to return these soon if I'm not keeping them. Keep (yay) or save for something else (nay)?

I really like the pants on you and would definitely keep them.
Regarding the vest, I don't like it with those pants so it's kind of trowing me off. A tentative yes to the vest.

I feel the same as Celia. The pants look good. The vest I am not so sure about. I don't care for it with the pants (a bit too army) but I would like to see it with something else before giving an opinion.

I like both pieces -- and they look awesome paired with red. They would look equally fabulous with the other colors you've mentioned. But I am admittedly biased as I am a huge fan of cargo pants and utility jackets/vests. I have a very similar vest (from Old Navy) and it is really useful as a casual third piece in the Spring… right up until the full Summer heat hits… and then again in the Fall. I even pair it with dresses and pencil skirts -- which helps to dress them down a bit for my very casual lifestyle. I wear my cargo pants all year long -- even in the summer with a colorful tank/tee and sandals.

Before you make a final decision, I suggest taking a little time to play around with the individual pieces to see how they work with the rest of your transitional and warm weather wardrobe.

I like both pieces, but not together. I think the vest would work with jeans.

The vest looks good worn open with the pants. Vests like these are great for hiking and traveling.

I say yay because I am searching for a vest like that (must check out Target), and I love olive bottoms. I wouldn't wear them together, though.

I like the joggers better than the vest, Joy. Great with the red flats.

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

You make everything look good Joy!!

I agree a vest can be useful but I am not sure about this one.  I do like the joggers though.  I feel the vest is a bit RATE for your style.

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

Definitely KEEP for the joggers. I think what's throwing us all off here is that the vest and joggers look too army (and not at all YOU) here.

How about you style the vest in a few different ways and post pics? I actually like the vest when I look at it as an individual piece. It would be useful to stay a bit warm and would look good with many colors you wear.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Thank you to all of you. I will keep the joggers, especially as I can use some different bottoms for summer. I will play with the vest some more to see how it looks with some other pieces. As was pointed out, it may be too rate for my style.

I saw a woman wearing a similar vest the other day and it was adorable!

Together, I think it's too much, but I think separately they could be some great pieces for your wardrobe. I would be inclined to try the vest with white bottoms.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Zibbets, I love the idea of the vest with white bottoms! Thank you.

I like the pants which seem like cargo- joggers- very cool.
The vest , I think you can do better in fit. Not super- tailored, but more refined, and maybe this one is too long for the shape. I've liked some of the travel- wear vests with pockets.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Love the red with the olive but the vest seems to overwhelm you. Keep the pants.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Unfrumped, I have often seen those travel vests and wondered about them. Do you have one? I'd like to know more.
Thank you, Shevia. I think you are right.

Joy, I have a Scotte vest. I took it to Turkey a few years ago. Mine is grey. I think it has around 15 pockets. I don't know if it's a look you'd like. Except for two side pockets, all the pockets are accessed from the inside. I was comfortable wearing it until it warmed up. I still carried a purse, but kept valuable things in the vest, such as my passport, camera and wallet.

It was an impulse buy right before we left. It turned out to be very handy, particularly going through airport security. Just take it off going through security and then put it back on. Your valuables are safer in the pockets than loose in one of the bins.

The trousers are cute with the red. I love how they finish at the ankle.

Really not so sure about the vest.

  • rachylou replied 8 years ago

Keep! :D The red shoes with them are fantastic. Remember this Angie blog post? I think of it all the time!

I like the joggers and they seem like a comfortable summer wardrobe addition. I agree with others that the vest is more of a question mark and that trying it with other bottoms would make sense if you are considering it. The proportions of it may be a little off; a shorter, simpler one may be worth a try.

  • replied 8 years ago

I definitely like the olive pants, but I'm kinda wanting to see the vest styled with other items before I say yay or nay on it. I'm leaning towards a nay with the vest at the moment.

  • texstyle replied 8 years ago

    What Diane G said.

  • Cins replied 8 years ago

Agree with those that like pants, not the vest. Seems bulky and shapeless too me, but you are slim enough to to pull it off. I've been noticing a lot of drawstring jackets as a trend, that I think I will sit out. Love the olive with the red!

  • jill58 replied 8 years ago

Joy, your post reminded me of this vest that I saw and liked at Target.

  • replied 8 years ago

Way late here , and I too like both pieces , but definitely not together . I have a couple of cargo style vests in olive green that I wear with a dressier back bottom ,heels and a silk t-top. I think the juxtaposition makes the best look less costume-y. I also have one of mine loaded up with a collection of vintage crystal pins I've collected over the years .

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

I will have to come back to give more responses, but want to thank you all for being so helpful. Lisap, I hadn't thought of using the vest to dress down more dressy pieces and love the sound of your outfit and your collection of pins. I have been wanting to do something similar with a collection of vintage presidential campaign buttons.
Jill58, that vest looks much like mine except in cotton. I tried mine with white jeans and a striped tee today but didn't think it worked out very well.
Cins, I have thought of removing the drawstring on the vest to make it more streamlined, but not if I'm returning it.

  • Debbie replied 8 years ago

Joy-I am late to te party. I would definitely keep the pants. They look great. In my opinion if you are on the fence at all with the best return it. Sometimes I want something to work so bad but I can't get it too.
    I sent you a PM.

Did you see the Duchess of Cambridge was wearing a vest on her walk in Bhutan earlier this week?
