Kitchen Sink Mix: Bumblebee style

While looking for cold weather patterns to mix, I found a yellow/black/white plaid jacket and black and white plaid wool pencil skirt. Here is the resulting mish-mash. Too crazy?
I wore a maximal belt, floral necklace, and patterns in the plaids of jacket and skirt, stripe tee, equestrian scarf with some yellow plus black and white, and color block black/white bag. I could not find my black and white flats or would have included them too. I am wearing charcoal grey suede booties. To tone things down, I wore a plain charcoal trench over everything.
I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

Oh wow! I love it! Do you patterned stockings?

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

I had planned to wear black mini fishnets and forgot. Next time? depending on comments here.

Love the plaid on plaid!! That's the way to liven up a grey plaid ... I've been staring at my grey plaid trousers thinking about the dull factor...

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Rachylou, I know what you mean about the dull factor. The skirt I have is probably a good example of what Angie calls false-plain. It is black and white but looks plain grey from a distance. I usually wear it with red. It is a thrift store find Books Brothers, so needs to be de-dulled on a regular basis.

Dangerously fab, Joy. I particularly like the yellow jacket, in spite of, or maybe because the checks don't line up at the seams. Scarf or beads? Or both?

  • lyn67 replied 7 years ago

    OMG more then fab!:-))

  • cindysmith replied 7 years ago

I think the skirt and top are subtly patterned and allow that fab jacket to be the star. This outfit is a harmonious blend of patterns and textures

You nailed the maximal pattern mixing trend here, super fun outfit!

  • Joyce B replied 7 years ago

That is a great and well put together outfit!

  • Beth Ann replied 7 years ago

Yes!  So glad to see bold mixing again on the forum!  I love this outfit -- there's lots going on, but everything works together well to create a cohesive whole!

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Thank you, stylish women, for your comments and encouragement.
Approprio, good eye. To be totally maximal and get in a bit of Valentine and repeat the yellow, I did both jewelry and scarf. The jacket neckline calls for something. Wearing both, I can remove the scarf or wear it more open if it gets too warm.
Lyn, Cynthia, Lisa, Joyce and Beth Ann, I am thrilled that you feel this maximal outfit is working. Thank you.

I love this, Joy! So fun and sunny. It's a fabulous mix!

This pattern mixing / kitchen sink thing has me sorta nervous.  If you aren't careful I feel like you look like someone who just ran out of clean clothes to wear!  But Joy, Honey, you nailed it.  Beautiful!!!

  • Mirjana replied 7 years ago

Love, love outfit fantastic, especially like your yellow jacket, great combination. You look wonderful as usual and you always inspired me.

  • Sara L. replied 7 years ago

Great look!  I love the scarf and the jacket together.  The patterns are totally different but the colors are cohesive.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

    Killer

    You are NAILING this.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Mirjana, I am humbled that I have inspired you. I just hope to show that as one ages, they can still have fun with fashion... Maybe more easily because expectations of others can be low.
Sara, I'm glad that you like the scarf with the jacket. I usually wear a black with white polkadot scarf with this jacket, but was looking for something I had that repeated the yellow/gold of the jacket.

Angie, we must have crossed posted. Thank you. Your approval makes me confident with these experiments.

The mix and scale of these patterns work so well and cheerfully together! You look great.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Thank you, UmmLila and Columbine. You give me courage to be daring.

This is a lovely ensemble. I love it. I think I would wear it with that gorgeous necklace instead of the scarf.

Gorgeous outfit Joy.  I love the jacket.  Great maxi pattern mixing.

  • unfrumped replied 7 years ago

    Wiw, this is truly artistic!

I know it's not " maximal" to suggest this, but I could see PART of the pattern- mixing working for more regular, but still adventuresome, outfits. The plaid and the stripe both have that crisp black& white graphic vibe and could mix even if you kept some other elements solid.

  • RobinF replied 7 years ago

Wow, you really nailed it! Love that jacket!

  • DonnaF replied 7 years ago

LOVE this!!! Especially the top half! Guess I like maximal. I want to steal that jacket. Yellow is so hard to find and goes so well with black and white.

  • Joy replied 7 years ago

Thank you, dear stylish ladies. You have given me the encouragement to continue trying some degree of maximal in my outfits, as unfrumped wisely suggests.
Style Fan, Robin and Donna, that jacket was an Angie pick a few years ago from Target of all places. Actually it is lined and has held up well. I usually do pattern mix by wearing it with black and white polka dots but a plain yellow pencil skirt.

  • Bijou replied 7 years ago

I can't believe I almost missed this post, you look wonderful Joy. The colours and patterns are beautiful on you. I love how much fun you have with fashion.

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

I had missed it, too. This is a wonderful outfit and a great example of pattern and texture mixing. There is a lot going on but it works perfectly.
