June challenge and the 3rd piece

Last week in my June challenge of going through my summer clothes I featured some new pieces that I'd not had a chance to style. This week I'm pulling out the stuff that's seem several summers...maybe too many. That's what I need your help to decide.
For today I combined Inspiration from Angie's blog today on third pieces in an outfit. The Ann Taylor white shorts are up for review. They still fit but date back to my first summer on YLF when they were recommended. For my body I like the knee length, heavy enough white fabric that pockets don't show, and rear pocket flats that add a little volume visually to my flat rear. They are in great condition but do they look dated? Are these ok for a nearly 69 year old to wear in public?
I am wearing them very casually with a black cotton tank from Target and my leopard Croc house shoes. (Last photo)
1-2: lace open back pull-on top as 3rd piece over tank
3: linen kimono jacket over tank
4: gingham shirt worn open over tank
5: cotton moto vest over tank
6: basic outfit of shorts and tank
Should I keep wearing these shorts? Which third pieces in this line-up work best? These are for hot days when the topper serves more for added style than warmth. I appreciate your thoughts.

I think these shorts are great. I like all iterations, but to me, the black moto vest looks the sharpest and most modern.

  • texstyle replied 8 years ago

I think they look really great Joy - and I agree with viva that they look esp. good with the black vest and tank. I'd probably wear the heck out of them.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Yay, Viva and Texstyle, your favorite (the vest) is also mine this humid warm day. I wondered if I dare bare my aging upper arms, but it's a way to stay cool *sigh*

  • MTBGirl replied 8 years ago

I don't think they look dated at all, they look great! I like all the ways you've style them but love #3 for a more dressy option.

  • kellygirl replied 8 years ago

These are terrific. Keep wearing the shorts, Joy. They look fab on you!

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Donna, thank you. That's a good idea for dressing the outfit up a bit.
Kellygirl, ( spell check keeps wanting to change your name to Jellygirl) thank you for letting me know the shorts are still ok to wear.

  • DizzyLizzy replied 8 years ago

Definately keep wearing these - they look fab. You've really shown me just how versatile a pair of white knee length shorts can be - i think every topper looks great.

  • shedev replied 8 years ago

I think the shorts are classic. I like the way you styled them and I would keep them.

  • Inge replied 8 years ago

Not dated at all in my book either, Joy. The shorts look amazing on you, and I like all the ways you've styled them. Those animal print Crocs are so fun!-)
My favourite outfit is the one with the kimono jacket. A very stylish way to dress up the shorts.
But 1-2, 4 and 6 are great casual looks too. Stylish and breezy with the high-low hemline and lace detailing in the first outfit, and sassy and fun with the gingham shirt.
I also agree that the shorts look very sharp and modern with the black moto vest.
See, these are super versatile. Hold on to them, and know that you look amazing in all these outfits !-)

DizzyLizzy, Shedev and Inge, thank you for your comments and letting me know which you like and especially whether or not to keep the shorts.  Lizzy, I find white shorts very versatile. these are just a few with black, but I also like them with navy, and many other colors.  I find white almost more versatile than blue denim.

Inge, that kimono jacket is one of my favorite summer items.  The linen makes it more dressed down than silk.  I have a couple of citron tops that work well under it and pick up the deep yellow dragons in the pattern.  You can just see them a bit on the sleeves.

  • Inge replied 8 years ago

Yes, I see what you mean, Joy. It is a stunning print, and I love that it is linen! I've no doubt it looks just as gorgeous with your citron tops as it does with the black top here.

  • Nebraskim replied 8 years ago

I think the shorts are still keepers. I live the kimono top and the vest. My least fave is the top in pix 1 but not sure why. The gingham shirt feels picnic to me, but I like the shirt.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Nebraskakim, I think that the lace topper in the first 2 pictures may be just too young a look for me worn casually. Worn over a black sheath dress it may look better. Thank you commenting and helping me consider these pieces.

Not dated at all! I like all the looks you have crafted and please do bare your arms with impunity because you look great.

  • Rubygirl replied 8 years ago

Keep wearing the shorts! They look terrific on you!

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

I think you look fabulous Joy.  Bare those upper arms proudly!  My favourite of these is #5.  And I'm not sure that shorts like this will ever look dated... a total classic in my book.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 8 years ago

I like the shorts and the solid black pieces best. was off Bermuda length shorts for a couple of years, but somehow they seem fresh again to me.

  • Windchime replied 8 years ago

The shorts look great on you, Joy! They seem to be one of those classic items which can function in a wardrobe for many years. I really like your animal print shoes with them. My favorite tops are #3 and #5.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Ceit and Elizabeth, I'm glad the arms still look ok. Thank you.
Ceit, Ruby, Elizabeth and Windchime, it's good to be able to wear the shorts with confidence. Ummlila, I don't think I'd wear these Bermudas if they were wide or much shorter, but that's just my preference.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

The shorts look great - I don't see what could be dated without them. I like the lace top and, call me a third piece rebel, just the basic outfit.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Thank you, Shevia. LOL at "third piece rebel"

  • unfrumped replied 8 years ago

    Classic they are!
I like the black moto. I think it would be fun with a graphic T.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

A graphic tee! Unfrumped, that's a great idea. Thank you. I can't wait to experiment.

  • replied 8 years ago

Hi Joy.  I've been following your posts every day; I haven't had time to reply though.

I love the white shorts.  You make them look spectacular.  I am terribly enamored with the kimono.

  • Karie replied 8 years ago

I think they look fantastic - I'd keep them for sure. I like all versions with my favs being #1 and #4. I have a pair of white shorts that are about 8 years old, and I still wear them. They were a favorite then, and they're a favorite still!

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

I say keep! They are still fab esp styled like here, all(my fave are 4&5)! Really Joy, you always look fab!

  • Runcarla replied 8 years ago

Keep! #5 is particularly stylish, and #4 fresh and fun.

  • Sara L. replied 8 years ago

I think the shorts look great on you.  All of these are nice outfits.  Breezy and modern.  I wouldn't worry about your arms - I never look at people's arms when it's hot outside.

  • Maneera replied 8 years ago

I love those shorts on you, Joy. And had you not mentioned your age, I would have never guessed it!

I love all the ways you style them. They are definitely a keeper. Your legs and arms (even upper arms) look great; don't worry about that at all.

I love the shorts with the black tank just as they are, and I especially love the kimono jacket outfit.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Thank you all for your help. The kimono jacket seems the favorite, but I was surprised that each look was someone's favorite, including just the tank with no topper ( mostly how I wear an outfit around the house on a hot day).

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Joy, you, your arms, and your shorts, and your outfits ALL look wonderful!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

I love all of these outfits! Keep those shorts, Joy, and wear them with confidence. All of these toppers keep them very current and stylish looking. I especially like the lacey topper for its added texture, but that's just my thing--I love playing with textures. I also love the moto vest, and the linen kimono is a slightly more dressy look, perfect for a summer lunch out with friends.

  • Mamavalveeta03 replied 8 years ago

Chiming in late here, but I love the kimono jacket with the shorts and tank. Lovely! Definitely keepers.

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

    THAT LACE TOP!

Your age has nothing on you - your style comes through with ease. In awe.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Suz, Firecracker, Mamavelveeta, and Una, your comments have put a big grin on my face. Thank you.

  • Helen11 replied 8 years ago

A late reply from me, too. Joy, you always look fab! I like the lace topper. Maybe it seems the breeziest third piece. All the black and white looks are very fresh in the heat. You're an inspiration
