Joining the Plain on the Train. ETA another plain outfit

Inspired by the fabulous plain outfits lately I pulled out some plain beige taupe pieces today the pants are taupe pull-ons sweater is an oldie worn over an old grey tank. Scarf was thrifted years ago, silver sneakers and earrings made from beer can pop tops are silvery colored and from an art fair. Small bag is consignment. I feel plain until I take off the shoes indoors and see the tan wool socks with big white pokadots that look wild beside the rest of the outfit. Can I ride the train?
ETA: this outfit is a dark chocolate brown EF long sleeved tee and wide pants. In the first photos (3-5) I am wearing a long cashmere brown cardigan, taken off in the last photo(#6) The scarf is the plainest brown one that I have, an old brown silk square with some white polkadots. The dark brown shoes are old Me Too patent flats with square toes.

I like the play on texture and shine in your outfit - great look! Can’t see all the details on my phone- but the whole outfit is wonderful ( nice silver ring )!

This is lovely ... The 'plain' palette is lifted by the texture, pattern, and metallics.

This sweater was perfect for a day that went from rain to partly sunny. Thank you for your comments.

Pieces might be plain but effect is not. I am not sure I would let you on the plain train but you look fab!

  • rachylou replied 2 years ago

Amazingly unplain for plain! So rich in texture!

  • Runcarla replied 2 years ago

This is a very handsome look, Joy.  Individually simple garments, but a very interesting texturally rich composition when all together.

  • Joy replied 2 years ago

Thank you, Shevia, Rachylou and Runcarla, for your great comments. I had not realized that I had so much texture and some shine in what I thought was a simple outfit. Tomorrow I will try again. Is black and white too much contrast for a plain outfit?

  • Suz replied 2 years ago

Texturally so rich! It's the farthest thing from plain to my eye, but the pieces are minimal and so I think it works with the theme! Joy, I think you are a natural maximalist, so Jil Sander minimalism is a stretch!

  • Synne replied 2 years ago

Wow, what a role texture plays in an outfit! Really good look. And you also added shine (shoes) like a pro. This is a very arty, but earnest, playful and sincere look. (I am lacking the right adjectives). I don't know why, but what comes to mind is that this is the perfect outfit you would wear to the Nobel Price in Literature drinks & mingling party after you have received an award (...!)

  • Joy replied 2 years ago

Thank you, Suz and Synne, Suz, I am happy that the basic pieces work with the theme. Synne, I love your thoughts and the idea of winning a Nobel Prize and mingling with winners!

  • Sally replied 2 years ago

That is really elegant and I like the way you wore your hair as well

  • Joy replied 2 years ago

Thank you. Sally. My hair has gotten very long with over a years COVID growth, so I’m wearing it up.. So easy but it looks best from the back or side.

  • Staysfit replied 2 years ago

Wow Joy, you can have a seat in first class!  You make plain look elegant and easy!  You also match the tiles on your wall!  So much pretty texture and interesting tonal variety here that plain is not boring or simple.

  • Bijou replied 2 years ago

Have to echo Staysfit - your plain look is very stylish and elegant.

What a great example of how “plain” cuts out the details to let beauty shine through.

Synne, “ the perfect outfit you would wear to the Nobel Price in Literature drinks & mingling party”, spoken like a Swede!

    Love it! Welcome aboard :)

One of my top Joy favorites! Love this from head-to-toe!

  • Angie replied 2 years ago

Lots of textural interest! You have put together plain your way with signature Joy- skill. The light neutrals are lovely with your hair :)

  • RobinF replied 2 years ago

I think this looks great - not plain at all. Great colors and textures.

  • Joy replied 2 years ago

Thank you all for your comments and encouragement. How lovely to read such cheer first thing in the morning. I am inspired to try again.

I added a dark brown outfit that I tried to keep plain. Usually I would use a leopard print bag and/or scarf and maybe leopard flats too. I have very little dark brown in my wardrobe. The long cardi I am wearing barely made our move but was such a winter workhorse that I brought it. The last two photos show a brown and red thrifted scarf that reminded me of Fashintern’s red jacket with brown. This is not what I would consider plain.

  • Irina replied 2 years ago

Wonderful combination of browns! My favorites are 1-4. Plain me likes plain outfits :)

  • slim cat replied 2 years ago

With my preference for prints I do enjoy the addition of red&brown scarf - but all look great on you!

  • Katerina replied 2 years ago

Joy, you are elegance personified… I love your versions of plain. The beige taupe outfit is gorgeous with the textures and the metallic shoes. The brown outfit blows me away - soo elegant. Although I love big scarves too, my favorite is the “plain” version of the brown outfit.

  • notsaf replied 2 years ago

The chocolate brown is downright GLAMOROUS. So sharp with the contrast with your hair and the glam shades and bag. Possibly my favorite ever look on you, Joy!

  • Joy replied 2 years ago

Notsaf, that is high praise. Summer may be a good time to try for more simple outfits as it is not comfortable to have lots of layers.
Katerina, you are always looking so polished and elegant.
Slim cat I bought that scarf to tie red and brown together. I need to experiment with it more.
Irina, I also like 1-4 best. You are not plain!
