August Challenge: Warm Fall Blue and Brown Capsule

It was fun and educational to put some capsules together for warm fall to feel refreshed. This does not mean that they are the only pieces I will wear for the next 6-8 weeks, but they were held back from the rest of the summer from seeing little, if any wear.
This capsule is still in need of tweeking and will draw from grey, black, denim and whites. What am I missing? Suggestions welcomed, especially for pairings and styling.

No help-- but that patterned tank is GORGEOUS!

Lovely capsule Joy.  We are twinsies on that cobalt EF top (in fact I'm wearing it today!) and I adore that beautiful paisley scarf/wrap.  Do you have any amber jewelry?  Would be lovely with this capsule.  Oh and you are making more remember that I have some wood jewelry that I should pull out for "warm summer."

What a beautiful and cohesive capsule for fall, Joy! I love love love the patterned top in image 1. Just gorgeous! All this blue reminds me of pink for some reason. I've never built capsules so I don't know how it works much...but that blue skirt will look lovely with pinks, reds, burgundy or wine. Just a thought.

Joy you are my inspiration and I seem to be copying you like nobody's business! This weekend I put together 2 hot autumn capsules in orange, white and khaki/olive and in blue and brown-- though my blues are more teal. I am just fawning over your cobalt. I think it will pair superbly with the brown you show and it looks to me like you could get endless outfit combos from these pieces. I can't wait to see some renditions.

What a great capsule, Joy! Would you consider adding in some white or olive pieces...that might give you a few more options. Love the richness of the brown/cognac pieces, definitely gives the feeling of fall in the air!

    Another lovely set of colours!

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Thank you for all of your lovely thoughts and ideas.

MuseumGal, I have an amber pendant set in silver.  It would be pretty with the scarf.  I'd never thought of putting the two together.  Thank you for the idea.  That EF cobalt top is perfect for a hot day.  I love it.

Elly and Maneera, the top in #1 makes me happy.  A watercolor -like design has become my favorite type of print.  The high-low hem would work well with a high-waisted bottom piece.  I have a pink top that is a bit on the warm side that would work with the blue skirt, but berry colors are usually too cool for wearing next to my face.  Orangey reds, yes. I will have to try that combination.

    Aliona, you made my day.

Carole, I will be adding white to the mix for sure.  I like the idea of adding olive with blue and/or brown and will have to play with that idea.

Thank you, Alasse.  Autumn colors are favorites and inspiring.

Lovely!! I know you look wonderful in blue so look forward to seeing this in action.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Kiwigal and Aliona, I have been wearing some of these color combinations this week as it has been hot.  I'll post some WIWs in a few days.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Lovely. Have you added light grey jeans - can't quite tell from the pic? How about some ink blue too. You're clever, Joy.

Did you hit a milestone birthday last week, btw?

  • Cerinda replied 8 years ago

Lovely colors together!  Heavens, those blue / brown scarves are my personal fashion holy grail.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Angie, it will probably be too hot for jeans but I could add my light grey EF crepe pants.  I think I lost a post a few about my birthday but, yes I had a birthday last week.  Getting calls from Japan and photos of a dear baby in Colorado holding candles of my birthday number and grinning were highlights.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

WOOOHOOOO. Did you just turn 70?

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Cerinda, those blue/brown scarves are favorites...one of those things that I bought immediately without waiting for a sale.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Angie, I have about 360 days until 70.  DH, who is always thinking ahead, calls me 70 now, so I guess I am in round numbers; certainly close enough.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

    Aha. SO nearly there. YAY.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

Yes, nearly there. My "twin" friend who shares my birthday says that we must plan something special.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

    YOU MUST.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

It will be 50 years since my "twin" and I spent a summer exploring Europe. Maybe it is time to go back, although probably not on $5 a day.

Joy, I love blues and browns together.  Especially when the browns are orange-ish or cognac, since blue and orange are complementary colors.  What great and versatile capsule colors!  Oh, and I love that wood and stone necklace.

What a gorgeous capsule.  Love your style.  You have such great accessories.

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

Love your capsule Joy! The only thing I would suggest is the addition of some gold accents (jewellery, shoes or other accessories). I think gold goes so well with brown and blue.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Joy, I hope you do make that trip with your friend to Europe. Would that ever be fascinating for the two of you!

    And happy belated birthday!

This is a great capsule. Like the others, I'm admiring that watercolour print tank.

How clever of you to combine brown and blue for this capsule. The blue keeps it summery and fresh to reflect the temperatures while the brown brings it into autumn.

I may have given you the idea for these capsules originally, but you have taken the idea and run with it in a way that I have never matched! I think your large wardrobe and eclectic sensibilities are a huge advantage in this. When I first came up with the idea, I didn't really have entire capsules of clothes that I could afford to "cordon off" as it were  -- I needed to wear everything all the time. Now I might have a bit more flexibility, but it seems I still don't have enough to create a (mostly) season dedicated capsule. I will have to give that some thought because I still really love this idea and think it is a fantastic way to maintain a sense of freshness in the wardrobe without buying too much that is new.

Hmm. Maybe part of it has been our weather patterns -- they've been different from usual the past few seasons so I can't predict what will work well.

Jeweled, I am wearing blue ( dark denim ) and orange ( well, bordering on coral) today and will have to get a photo. My niece made and gave me that necklace. I love the frogs on it.
Style Fan and Brooklyn, I have gone through stages with accessories and am rediscovering some favorites. Brooklyn, gold is a good idea to brighten things up.
Suz, that top reminds me of the scarf tops that I saw everywhere in NYC about 3 years ago. I never found one for myself, although my cold shoulder striped top comes close. Maybe I should hack a big square scarf and make something.
Your seasonal capsule idea has kept me from buying summer refreshers this year and I've been satisfied with my closet. Next spring I will be looking for some new summer bottoms or hacking jeans. :)
