30x30: Week 2 plus fringe earrings for Inge

You have seen Sunday's outfit which I posted as a kimono jacket outfit. The rest of the week was quite casual with mostly hot days turning cooler the last couple of days.
This week starts with Saturday (1). I started out with the white cropped Joe's Jeans and EF striped linen pullover that I wore on Monday the week before, but decided that I was done with those low rise jeans and they are out of the closet and my 30. I replaced them with Gap wide leg crops. Do they work with the cropped top?
Sunday ( 2/3) I wore from the capsule the EF black shift dress, the silk patterned jacket and black ankle strap flats. I did sub in a different belt from the white web belt. The photos show the outfit with and without the belt. I am always happy to wear this jacket.
Monday (4/5): my released hem cropped jeans, black tank and black bomber jacket. Because I'd worn the black flats the day before, I wore the white ones from the capsule. This worked well for yard work and babysitting.
Tuesday (6-7): some more capsule changes. I learned that I craved color and added a tomato red tee. I also needed more casual bottoms for hot weather due to laundry bottlenecks. These are an experiment, Lee Rider denim Bermuda shorts on which I have undone the hem to make them longer and more interesting. Do these look acceptable to your eye?
Wednesday (8): another addition to the capsule ( I decided to remove accessories from my 30x30). I wanted to wear this hot weather DIY chop job of a top near the 4th of July weekend. It was made by cutting sleeves and bottom off a thrifted tee and worn over a grey layering tank (not counted in my 30). Everything else is from the capsule.
Is the tee ridiculous on me? It is as close to gear as I get, so used for exercise.
Thursday (9-11): the Gap wide legs again, this time with the EF black linen assemmetrical top. Photo 9 is the length from the store with frayed hem edge. Photos 10 and 11 show hems turned up 2 lengths. Which is best?
Friday (12-16): for a visit to a wildlife sanctuary where we walked over 3 miles. EF bone pants, tomato tee ( different in 12 and in 13/14). Which do you think I should keep? And I added a tomato red short sleeved cardi to the capsule for more color.
For Inge: 15-16: showing my fringe earrings. These were much longer and I hacked off a bunch of fringe to this length. Should I cut off more? Are these silly on an old lady? They were very inexpensive, probably marked down because they were so long.
I will return with what I learned this week from this challenge.

This 30x30 challenge is making me realize that I wear and need lots of clothes. I had picked mostly plain and neutral pieces thinking they were the most versatile, then started craving more summer color and pattern. I also did not want to miss a chance to wear a few items that work best around the 4 the of July holiday. If I eliminated accessories from the capsule I could add these. They will also help with laundry back ups as I wait for jeans and jackets to dry.
I found that I was ready to get rid of items that I didn't feel good wearing, like the low rise jeans. This will help me to edit out other pairs with this fit even if they are not in the capsule. I will stop thinking I will wear then for one more season and become a better closet editor. I will probably also become more picky about what I buy.
When I picked out my 30, I did not plan well enough for hot weather. Sometimes it is not actually hot, but the sun at this altitude can be brutal.
I will still try to stick as much as possible to wearing the remaining items from the original 30, filling in with the added ones only when needed.
I may still add another dress or replace one with a different summer dress.
Sterling. Thank you for starting this challenge. Next time I hope to make smarter choices.

Joy--I am really impressed by how much fun you seem to have with your wardrobe and by how game you are to modify your clothes--by chopping a hem or a sleeve or unpicking the hem or shortening the too-long earrings.  You are an inspiration!

  • Mirjana replied 6 years ago

Bravo Joy I am impressed with so many combinations and you energy for that. All are great , hat suit you nice and I like especially white and black and white and red.

My favorite part of these posts are lessons learned.  I'll have to come back later and comment on the outfits in more detail.  But the earrings are great.  I would cut them closer to your chin length.

I could have written the second part of your post myself, Joy.  In fact, I think I did!  :)  When picking 30 items to last a while there is a real tendency to pick things that are neutral and go with everything.  But that just isn't enough for some of us, is it.  I was also craving pattern and colour, and dresses.  So I also deleted accessories (and shoes) to make room and am much happier.

You look great in all your outfits.  Bravo!  That red and black jacket is particularly stunning.

I like your Gap crops their original length.  Love what you did to that thrifted tee!  Also love the "new" shorts.  The only thing I'm not crazy about is the fit of the pants in 13... in the crotch area.  Is the rise a bit high?  Or do they need pulling up a bit?  Not sure.

  • skylurker replied 6 years ago

I still find the striped top too short.
I love the longer asymetrical top with the culottes #9, fantastic look.
I love, love #5, hip and adorable.
Is the #7 tee same as #12? In that case I prefer #13-14, because it's fluid and looks more luxe, less casual than the other.
I'm not a fan of grey/charcoal colours on you #8, and the top is too casual for my taste.
    Bermudas look ok.
I'm still pondering the culottes' length. My eyes are fast adjusting to the wider silhouettes, and I think #9 looks good. But from my own experiences, trying them on in stores, I prefer shorter (longer side of #11) otherwise I felt overwhelmed. Hope Angie will chime in.

  • Tanya replied 6 years ago

Great outfits all around, Joy, but #9 really stands out for me, very sophisticated and refined.  The fringe earrings are lots of fun :)

Thank you all for your helpful comments and observations... And for reading the tome I ended up writing.
Emily, I do have fun with my clothes. The tee hack of cutting off neckline, bottom and sleeves is great for a tee that is a bit too tight. It releases the knit. The shorts were very inexpensive and easy to do. I am thinking of releasing the hem of my white jean pencil skirt for a bit more length and interest.
Mirjana, white can be magical, can't it? I thank Angie that I now wear it year round.
Sterling, I was thinking the same thing about the length of those earrings. I look forward to your comments. I know this line up of outfits is not my best.
Elizabeth, thank you for addressing several issues I wondered about. The pants in 13 look pretty bad! I thought I was buying the same pant I'd had before but these are a slightly different style with a side zipper. They may need pulling up as they are sized up a size. I wear this color under some tunics and dresses so this pair may be reserved for that use. I doubt they can be returned. Maybe some alterations can be done. Right now they can be pulled up and down without unzipping. This also happens when one no longer has hips.
Skylurker, that striped top is being considered with a critical eye. I want to try it the way I'd envisioned wearing it and will show it in other outfits. Today I am wearing it for warmth over a column of navy ( navy pants and tank from the capsule). To my eye it looks better. As it gets hot, it will come off. I also hope that Angie will chime in about the length of the culottes. I could envision wearing them at each of these lengths.
The grey outfit is very casual and for a hot day. I am thinking of trying the top over a bright red tank for parade watching if it is hot. The tee in 7 is the same as 12 and a cheapie from Target. The one in #13/14 has a banded bottom to give it some structure. It is starting to look worn and this will be its last season. The neckline is too big for me but it is breezy and cool on a hot day. The attraction of both was the color...my best red and it matches the cardigan. I should look at sales for that color in a better top, but it is getting harder to find. Shades of red seem to cycle.

Ack, more writer's run-on. Sorry. I will try to edit later.

  • rachylou replied 6 years ago

These are great :) I think you should keep the fringe earrings long - no half measures!

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Rachylou, I should have shown them at full length. Hair extensions down to my nipples. :)

  • replied 6 years ago

Hi Joy!!!  It is always so nice to see your weeks in prospective. You really do have a lot of varied ensembles.  I so admire your skill at pulling things together, and yet still be completely appropriate.

My favorite are numbers 9 - 11.  It surprises me just how much I love this style of pant.  This stye looks so amazing on everyone I see wear it. I am definitely not an expert on pant length.  But my preference is the unhemmed version in number 9.

It is hard for me to tell, but I think the tee shirt in number 12 fits you better.

I want to give a shout out to number 8 because the fourth of July is just around the corner.  I happen to love flag prints at this time of year.

  • Runcarla replied 6 years ago

I just can't get past your released hem Bermudas and the white crops 9-11. Joy, can you get someone to photograph you straight on? The angle makes it hard to judge the length of the crops. From what I'm seeing I would say keep them the original length, or crop only a very little more. You own this palette of red, black, white and denim.

  • rachylou replied 6 years ago

    Lol, Joy!

  • Dianna replied 6 years ago

Great week of outfits.  I am amazed at how much variety you can achieve with 30 pieces.  My favorites this week are 2-3, and 9-10-11.

  • Jenni NZ replied 6 years ago

Hi Joy, all look fab as usual. On the tomato red tees, I prefer 13-14 because I like the scoop neck, though 7/12 also has a scoop neck right?- so I'm not quite sure why I like 13-14 better then. But if 13/14 is getting old then you could just keep 7/12 as a replacement?
I like the pants at all the lengths! So no help.
If I had done this challenge I would have needed lots of colour in it x

  • Jenni NZ replied 6 years ago

And, don't cut the earrings any more! I'm with Rachylou this time.

  • Angie replied 6 years ago

I almost fainted when I saw #5 and #9. KILLER.

Don't touch the length of those culottes.

  • deb replied 6 years ago

joy, I love all of your outfits.

  • minimalist replied 6 years ago

I enjoy your "writer's run-ons," as well as your fearless outfits!

  • minimalist replied 6 years ago

Challenge-wise, I've been wearing the same 5 garments, 2 scarves, 2 sandals. Enjoying high contrast and white denim; I don't think I'd have worn the white without the challenge.

That EF asymmetric top is calling my name.

  • Emily K replied 6 years ago

minimalist--I think you will have to fight me for the EF top (9-11).  I really like that one--and the whole outfit is calling my name.

  • Jaime replied 6 years ago

I love 4/5 - something I would be delighted to wear hat and all. I also love the white culottes as culottes - the bermuda length is good but makes them a whole other thing. The white and black bag is fantastic with your white and black outfits!

  • Sal replied 6 years ago

Joy - you look terrific.  You look wonderful in red, but black and white is also great.

The only outfit I was not sure about was the first one, it was a little fussier than the rest.  But the bar is very high because you are so elegant.

I like both tees - the first seems better for layering but I prefer the second one as I like the shape.  I would keep both as the colour is lovely on you.

  • Joy replied 6 years ago

Angie, I am humbled and thrilled to get a Killer from you! The wide crops outfit will probably be repeated this week as it will be hotter than it has been.
I plan to keep those crops the length they are for this season. I will still be experimenting with tops and toppers, most of which are not part of the 30 I am currently wearing.
Sterling, a lot of flag prints were on display at church this morning. This one is much more subtle than the usual red, white and blue stars and stripes. Should I try over-dying it red or blue or orange to try to get a more flattering color? So far no EF in the sandbox. I did wear my silk ruffled top with the butterflies.
I think I will keep both tomato tees for this season and be on the lookout for a better summer tomato red top. These two serve different needs. I do have a third, thrifted JCrew top in a similar color that is a bit more coral. It is also shorter. I kept it for skirts but it may also work with high waisted jeans.
Emily and minimalist, that EF top shows up occasionally on EBay. The one I am wearing is linen. EF also has a similarly shaped black one in a knit jersey that is longer. Minimalist, thank you for the kind comment.
Shevia, I thought of you with the outfit featuring the sun hat.
